KIIT Schools of Mass Com, Fashion and Film Sciences sweep Republic Day Cultural Show

Bhubaneswar: The group performance by the students of School of Mass Communication (SMC), School of Fashion Technology (SFT) and School of Film and Media Sciences (SFMS) bagged the first prize in the inter-university Cultural Show Segment during 70th Republic Day celebrations in KIIT University on January 26, 2019.

“My heartfelt congratulations to all the students of Bachelor of Film & Television Production, Bachelor of Fashion & Textile Design, Masters of Mass Communication & Journalism, all faculty members and staff members for receiving the 1st prize in Show Segment during the 70th Republic Day Celebrations at KIIT Deemed to be University,” said Prof H.S. Khatua, CEO SFMS, SFT & SMC in his email message.

Student groups from 11 different schools of KIIT University and KIIT International School competed among themselves with their dance troupes on wide range of themes related to violence against women, social messages and nationalist themes in the Republic Day Cultural Show Segment.

The winning troupe comprising 35 students from the three sister schools (SMC, SFT and SFMS) gave a scintillating performance of song and dance within a tight schedule of 5 minutes, giving a call for national integration. The dance drama, titled “Swadhinta Ki Aur”, took the audience to a journey from the pre-Independence struggle to the free India where misutilisation of power is rampant. The abuse of power was presented symbolically by the dramatic performance of Seven sins. However, the concluding moments of the performance gave a clarion call to all Indians to come together with an energy packed dance of ‘chale chalo’.

The students were delighted with the achievement after 10 days of rigorous practice and backstage preparation. “It gives us immense pleasure and a sense of pride to win. We were all honoured to get the first position. This is the result of hard work by all that paid off,” said Sargam Saxena, a second semester student from School of Mass Communication.

It was a perfect show case of talent and creativity. The concept, dialogues and the properties for the show were all developed by the students with the support and guidance by the faculties and other supporting staff members. “Everyone contributed but the main credit should be given to the concept developers Himanshu and Puru, under the guidance of Sushant Bahinipati sir. Other faculty members also helped a lot. A special mention is of Raj Kishor Moharana sir for making the props. And last but not least, the backstage crew, “said Nidhi Nyari, 2nd semester student, School of Mass Communication.

Notably, since 2010, the three schools participated nine times together in the Republic Day celebrations and have won the first prize five times and second prize twice in the cultural show and tableau segment competitions.
