About School of Mass Communication

School of Mass Communication, KIIT Deemed University (KSMC) began after the first intake of students within its Undergraduate programme in 2016. In 2017, the department shifted to its current state-of-the-art campus, named Koushik, popularly known as Campus-18. Overlooking the beautiful Rose Garden, the campus is set amidst greenery. It has excellent infrastructure and associations with its sister concerns; Kalinga TV, Kalinga Bharati FM, and knewsodisha.com, where students get practical exposure and become industry-ready.

KSMC provides three degree programmes – Bachelor of Communication & Journalism, Master of Communication & Journalism, and Ph.D. in Communication & Journalism. The Master’s programme provides the opportunity for three specializations, namely Convergent Journalism, Communication for Social Change and Communications Management. The course structure is approved by the Board of Studies and Academic Council for being holistic and providing a solid foundation at the Undergraduate level, specialized expertise at the Postgraduate level, and cutting-edge research competencies at the Doctoral level. The curriculum has been thoughtfully designed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, fostering multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, flexibility, and a spirit of innovation to prepare students for the demands of a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Leadership

Dean’s Message

Welcome to the School of Mass Communication, KIIT Deemed to be University.

In an era where information travels faster than ever and intelligence (both artificial and human) reshapes society, communication has become a keystone of public life. It creates meaning, builds trust, and drives social change. At KSMC, we cultivate thinkers, storytellers, and ethical practitioners who will define the future of media, public discourse, and civic engagement.

KSMC is inspired and sustained by the extraordinary vision of our Honourable Founder, Dr. Achyuta Samanta. Through his pioneering institutions – KIIT, KISS, and KIMS – Dr. Samanta has demonstrated how education, inclusive social policy, and quality healthcare can be woven together to produce institutions of global standing with deep local relevance.

The media landscape is rapidly evolving. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed how we gather facts, create narratives, measure impact, and reach audiences. Yet, technology alone does not guarantee value. It is insight, ethical clarity, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to the public good that will decide whether media strengthens democracy or diminishes it. KSMC prepares students to navigate this complexity by collaborating with intelligent systems, interrogating algorithmic bias, crafting inclusive narratives, and placing human dignity at the centre of digital innovation.

We offer three flagship programmes designed to nurture depth and versatility: Bachelor of Communication and Journalism (BCJ), Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ), and PhD in Communication and Journalism. Our Undergraduate and Postgraduate specialisations, namely; Convergent Journalism, Communication for Social Change, and Communications Management, allow students to build pathways aligned with their intellectual passions and professional ambitions.

KSMC’s practice-led pedagogy help students learn in professional environments that include state-of-the-art TV studio, dedicated radio station, and advanced audio-visual laboratories. Kalinga Bharati 90.0 FM, Kalinga TV -the 24×7 news channel, and digital platforms like KNEWS and kalingatv.com provide invaluable experiential learning through hands-on training in print, radio, television, and online platforms. Students also engage with strategic communication campaigns, live projects, and community-based initiatives focused on policy, development, and health.

We also prioritize critical enquiry, ethical reasoning, and social responsibility by amplifying marginal voices, designing behaviour-change campaigns, and documenting the lived realities of communities. Our scholars and practitioners are encouraged to produce research that informs policy, uplifts communities, and fuels public debate. Cultural festivals, co-curricular activities, clubs, and sports complement academic learning and build confidence, leadership, and collaborative skills. Graduates from KSMC leave not only as media professionals but as reflective citizens ready to lead in a plural, fast-changing world.

I invite prospective students, researchers, and collaborators to explore the diverse opportunities that KSMC provides. Join us to learn, question, create, and translate ideas into impact. Together, we will reimagine the future of communication; one that is equitable, accountable, and deeply human.

Warm regards,
